My thoughts are posted on the main site here. What did the rest of you think of the Rare Replay and Sea of Thieves? Return to form, still skeptical? Let it all out.

Hello there! It's DK-BK 362 from DKVine. I think the recent announcements are a return to form for Rare. I expect good things from Sea of Thieves. Thanks for joining! I feel the same way. Just seeing how excited Gregg Mayles and Robin Beanland are about the project are enough to buy my confidence. Those men are legends.

Hello! I also have come over from DK Vine. Its a bit packed over there and would love to join in here on the ground floor! My thoughts when I first saw the SOT release trailer: I was just recently playing AC: Black Flag on the Xbone and from what I saw in the trailer, it didnt seem like much was different as far as what the games offer. But I obviously understand that its very early, and much will be added. But the things that did excite me (Art style, multiplayer, those skeleton bad guys) have me really pumped to see what comes of it!

Hello friends of Rare! Yet another who's ventured over from the DK Vine.
My absolute first thought when the Sea of Thieves trailer started was that they were actually going back to Project Dream and bringing it to light. Though this clearly isn't that, I have no doubt that Gregg Mayles has gone back to many design ideas for inspiration for this. I really am hoping to see some nods, like maybe trolls or Dinger the dog.
In regards to AC:BF: it's only natural for us to immediately compare to that because of what it is. It was a great game, but it was clearly released before it was finished - the scale too big and the technical tasks too great for the developers to truly polish before a holiday season release. Knowing Rare's track record, they will not release a game of this type in that buggy of a state. I also believe that though this is a far more different game than that, they can still learn some lessons from it in what it did and didn't do well regarding pirates and sea-faring.
I'm a bit curious about a potential combat system, hoping that they have a good first-person sword-play idea, rather than some sort of quicktime event scheme. I don't want repetitive combat; rather something that gives a nice satisfying feeling of accomplishment for wielding one's cutlass with finesse.
For now, the last main thing I'm curious about is characters, and whether there's a somewhat pre-determined group that you and your friends can pick from (a-la Left 4 Dead), or more along the lines of create your own and just head out (WoW, etc.). This will obviously have a big effect on plot and voice acting if it's the case; if we do choose our character, it would be fun to have the main plot dialogue recorded by many different voice actors so that we can choose that as well. If the game is more action/adventure focused and just about the journey and less plot-centric, I'd hope that there are some good interactive story elements along the way to present some story elements without having to tell a linear tale.
So wrapping up, and to answer the first question in regards to Sea of Thieves, I do truly believe this is a return to form for Rare, and I can't wait to learn what this game is actually setting out to be!

Shogun of Truth I think your point about Visual Variety is a huge one. Something that could separate the game from most other pirate games. But its also one of the most difficult things to do well. How do you make a game about pirates who are most closely associated with the Caribbean visit snow islands and such? Lava and volcanoes is pretty easy, but its a difficult thing to approach none the less. It'll be interesting to see what they do.

Depending on how big the game is, you could have more even on top of that if you could sail to more far off regions with different, more eastern, cultures to add even more variety.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; Black Flag is my favourite game since Rayman Origins and in my nebulous top 10 games of all time. It's just so beautiful and everything I ever wanted from an adventure game.
Taking that template an applying Rare's charm and polish? Oh man, this is gonna be something incredible.

Although im not terribly far, Im also really enjoying black flag. Did anyone ever play Pirates of the Caribbean Online? It was a free to play MMO for the computer and I use to play it back in 2008. It was free and pretty limited, but it had some fun moments. I know that Rare has said that SOT isnt a MMO, and thats probably a good thing. But the idea to run around with friends is a great concept. And with the awesome story lines Rare is capable of, its going to be great!

Black Flag is easily my favorite Assassin's Creed. The only fault with the game, IMO, is the story missions are not that great. Black Flag is one of those games are the story is really just a means to get to the side-activities.

Never played PotC Online - honestly didn't even know about it! Looks like it would have been fun, though!
Did any of you ever play the PotC story in Disney Infinity 1? It's been a couple of years, but I recall enjoying it well enough. And the art style is probably not far off from SoT. Might have to pay that another visit here soon.

It was actually the best story for DI 1. I was actually pretty impressed with it and thought the pirate ship mechanics were pretty well done. And yeah, I can see the art styles being very similar as well. Good call! Apparently ive played a lot of pirate games now that I think about it...
